PATTABHI JOIS FLORIDA WORKSHOP CANCELLED

[Update as of March 30: Terri Smith is offering an Ashtanga workshop in Islamorada March 27-April 6. Please read her comment below or get contact information here: Terri Smith's Ashtanga workshop in Islamorada (on Ashtanga.com). Thank you, Terri. -Ed.]

A friend just told me that she received an email that the upcoming workshop in Florida had been cancelled. I just took a look at the AYRI.org site and there was a message:

URGENT NEWS: PATTABHI JOIS FLORIDA WORKSHOP CANCELLED
Due to health complications, Pattabhi Jois has been advised not to travel at the present time.
He is fine and resting in Mysore. Full refunds will be given.

Hopefully it’s not serious. Our thoughts are with Guruji and his family.

We’ll let you know more if we hear anything.

UPDATE March 23 (from ashtanga.com):

From AYRI.org:

Florida workshop students: Please send your T-shirt size and mailing address to ashtangaguru@yahoo.com

UPDATE March 26:
Special Workshop: David Keil & Gretchen Suarez – Miami, FL, March 25-April 6

UPDATE March 30:
As Terri Smith tells us in the comments to this post:

Our beloved Guruji has been transferred to a regular ward and out of ICU, and is expected to recover.
Sharath and Saraswati are needed in Mysore to care for Guruji. We should not question their decision to stay.

The new AYI shala here in Islamorada awaits Guruji’s blessing before it can host classes.
As I am currently the only authorized teacher down here, I am doing my best to teach as I was taught.
If I do well, all grace is to my Guru. Any mistakes are my own.

If you are among the Ashtangis stranded in Islamorada, please stop by Paradise Yoga at mm 82. I’d love to meet you. Practice times are posted on www.paradise-yoga.net. Big thanks to Audra (studio owner) for the invaluable help she has given our community.

I hope SKPJ gets well soon!

I am going anyway, since I have a plane ticket and a place to stay–and those are nonrefundable. Do you think there’s any way a group of people could use the space at his new studio to practice? Aren’t a bunch of senior teachers coming who could stand in for SKPJ? Will the Keys be inhabited by wayward ashtangis?

There are three of us from Calgary still going, it would be great if we could organize together, practice, and send all of our energies to SKPJ…

    Any ideas?

Hi. This forum is great. I, too, am wondering about others still planning on going to Ilamorada. Maybe we can practice on the beach each day?! That would also be wonderful if a senior teacher took over and we had use of his space. I’ll keep checking back here for more info. Thanks.

How far from Miami to Key Largo? I am staying in Key Largo. Maybe someone wants to drive with me to Miami? But I think it’s about 1.5 or 2 hours. Yuck.

  12. yogimom said,

It is about 90 minutes each way to Miami. Too far to travel every day!

    Yogimom,

I’ve been trying to find a yoga studio in the Key Largo/Islamorada area, where they might let us do mysore before they hold their regular classes–this is my dream anyway. But no luck so far. I don’t think there are any studios in that area. I sure wish the Jois people would let us practice in their space . . .

I think there might be space outside and inside to practiceat the condo where I am staying.

I’ll be in Key Largo–where are you staying?

Maybe we can all set up small practice groups during the week. And then have a big dinner party at the end of it all!

It sounds like many of us are still going and trying to meet up with each other…
There was going to be a grand opening celebration…
I am wondering if maybe we can all plan on meeting up where the shala is going to be (or even at the Fish Bowl nearby) just to get acquainted and maybe just to all be able to have a moment in SKPJ’s honour?
    Thoughts?

Are You Going to Islamorada? Tell us

From the number of searches related to Pattabhi Jois’ new shala in Islamorada, Florida, it seems that there is great interest in the Grand Opening at the end of March. The first week of practice is sold out.

From the Registration form on the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute:

Otto the Travelling Gnome knows
more about Islamorada than you.

The comments section of both our posts have been relatively active, so it seems there’s a lot of interest…see

We haven’t seen any centralized place on the web where people are talking about where they are staying and what they’ve heard about Islamorada, i.e., the logistics of the whole thing. EZBoards does have some meanderings on the subject,

islamorada-flickr-leech-banner.png

Islamorada (courtesy Flickr Leech)

and there is some buzz on the subject on the various Ashtangi blogs (on Ashtangi.net and elsewhere).

We’d be happy to hear your thoughts about where you’re staying, how you’re getting there, and if you found it easy (or hard) to book lodging and travel. Drop us a note, you’ll be doing everyone who is still trying to plan their trip a big service.

I am spending a small fortune to stay in a three bedroom condo in Key Largo with my parents and daughter. I’m treating this week like a really great vacation for my family–and I get to practice with SKPJ! Can’t wait.

    Hi,

We spend the weekend in the keys and are interested in attending yoga classes in the mornings. We have studied Bikram yoga in the past, and are looking to get back into yoga. From the website, I couldn’t tell if you are offering classes for locals to participate in on the weekends/during the week? Please let me know.

    Regards,

    Allison
